Welcome to Casal Velino

Casal Velino

The town of Casalvelino rises on a luxuriant hill and is one of the most suggestive and integral villages of the Cilento coast.
Its very ancient origin is bound above all to the events of depopulation of the Elea-Velia aerea, in fact many are the tracks connecting this village to the ancient town of Parmenide and Zenone.
The name of “Casalicchio” was first mentioned in 1063 and became a couty-town in 1806 changing afterwards its name into ”Casalvelino” The R.D. no.249 came on May 18th 1893.
According to tradition the village was build when the inhabitants of the plain of S. Matteo, S. Giorgio and S. Zaccaria abandoned their villages to escape and to defend themselves from the attacks of the Saraceni and from the plague.
The splendor and the richness of the town are due to the cultivation of the olive-tree, the white fig of the Cilento and to the ovine and bovine stock-farming.
